White sage is from the Lamiaceae family and is native to Southern California and Mexico. It is an aromatic shrub that stays evergreen. It is harvested by hand and is dried only and not treated.
Some Native American tribes view white sage as sacred and burn the leaves for purification ceremonies as incense. The Chumash people use the white sage as a ritual and medicinal plant.
White sage can be used very well to treat sore throats, coughs, colds and upper respiratory infections. In addition, white sage is used as a sedative.
How to use.
Use a bowl, e.g. an Abalone shell. (Possibly make a bottom out of shell sand) Put a little white sage in there or hold your white sage stick above it with the end angled down. Then light the sage. With the sage stick, light the end. Blow it out when it burns well. White sage is not burned like a candle, but let it smolder like incense. The important thing is that the smoke is dispersed. This is best done with a feather, but blowing with the hands is also possible.
